singing

rest time

I put Ian on his blanket on the floor to allow him to stretch out a little, and pretty soon Emma ran over with her blanket. She spread it out and laid down next to him. It was so sweet!!!

a package from Uncle David

Emma loved the package! She was so excited to open it and find toy penguins sitting on top of the little outfits. And then she grabbed them one by one and "gave" them to Ian. :)

when we got back this morning

Emma, Ian and I dropped John off at work this morning and did a few errands on our way home. This is what happened when we got home:

Father's Day

John was working for most of the day, so after church the rest of us headed home, and made this dinner. Then I went to pick him up in the evening, and we had a quiet celebration.

yesterday - 4 days old

Ian's cord came off just after this picture was taken

such a good big sister

Emma has been adjusting to having a baby brother pretty well. When she first met him she steered clear for almost an hour, and then gradually warmed up to coming over and meeting the new baby in the basket.
Since then we have had a few ups and downs, but she is really starting to love him.
Now, when Emma gets up from her nap she signs for him and runs off to find the baby. His cries don't send her into a panic anymore. She is still very concerned, though. :)
Emma brings him blankets and his pacifier when she finds them lying around, and yesterday she showed him one of her books.

We are still very watchful when Emma and Ian are together, since Emma's loving can be a bit too exuberant and sometimes we are afraid that Ian might be harmed, but she is becoming a very good big sister.

It's A Boy!

Ian Andrew Smillie arrived in our home on Tuesday, June 8 at 3:32 in the morning.
The labor and delivery went smoothly and were uneventful, with Ian arriving just 4 hours after the midwife got here. When the midwife weighed him we were startled to hear that he was 9 lbs 7 oz! At 22 1/4" he's quite a bit longer than Emma was. :)
Since Emma was nearly bald when she was born, we were also surprised to see a head full of thick dark hair. And he has a cleft chin, too!

becoming more adventurous

Emma got a "new" dress the other day. I made it from a mini skirt my Mom had found at a thrift store that had a really sweet floral print and was too cute - and cheap - to pass up. Emma seems to really like it!

She is overcoming her timidity of grass, hills, and uneven ground and is starting to explore!

and in other news ....

My little sister Anna contributed to a Memorial Day article that got published in the Fresno Bee.
She also graduated with her BA from Fresno State a few weeks ago - we are so proud!
